The New Music Row

For decades, Music Row represented a dream. It was a physical place in Nashville where songs were signed, careers were launched, and access meant everything. If you weren’t there, it could feel like you were already behind.

But the music business changed, and so did Music Row. Jill Riley, owner of CGS Records and founder of The Sound System, believes that Music Row went through a death, a burial, and a resurrection.

Death

In the late 1990s, the rise of Napster and digital distribution changed the music industry forever. Power shifted. Gatekeepers temporarily lost control. The old system, which was built on record deals, physical sales, and a few people deciding who mattered, began to crumble.

Music Row felt that shift deeply. The dream that once felt clear became confusing, distant, and harder to access for independent artists. For many, it felt like Music Row died.

Buriel

As the music industry changed, the landscape changed too.  Historic houses were torn down. Offices disappeared. Apartments and condos rose in their place. To some, it felt like the final insult, like the erasing of music history in exchange for real estate. However, developers agreed to honor the history by putting up iconic pictures and posters of the music born in Music Row in these new buildings.

And something unexpected happened during the burial. Those buildings didn’t just create housing, they created proximity. People living, creating, collaborating, and sharing life together. Community didn’t disappear; it quietly shifted forms.

The Resurrection

Music Row is now experiencing the resurrection, not only as a location, but as a mindset.

Today, Nashville isn’t just a place you move to. It’s a way of working. One rooted in collaboration, creativity, and connection rather than permission and gatekeeping. Independent artists no longer need to live on Music Row to be part of Music Row. You can plug into our community from anywhere. You can make it part of your career, your journey, your story.

This is where The Sound System comes in.

A New Kind of Community

The Sound System exists to connect independent artists (whether they live in Nashville or not) to a music community. The heart of Music Row has always been about people.

Today, independent artists can collaborate, share resources, and build sustainable careers on their own terms. No compromise necessary. You just need the right structure, the right support, and the courage to step in.

Success as an independent artist isn’t about luck anymore. It’s about having a system that actually works for you. Music Row didn’t die. It evolved, and the door is open wider than ever.

Welcome to the new Music Row.

Welcome to The Sound System.
